Raise a glass of VooDoo Juice at Iggies Beach Bar — or a rum and Coke if you can’t be in St. Thomas with us today — and join in the celebration of National Rum Day, honoring the true spirit of the Caribbean.

“The banks may not be closed, and we still have to go to work, but to all the salty island souls out there, National Rum Day is still an important day to celebrate,” says Caribbean blogger RumShop Ryan. “Rum helps us escape to the Caribbean even when we aren’t there. It’s a memory with every sip.”

Distilled from sugar cane, rum was invented in the Caribbean more than 400 years ago and quickly became a part of island social life as well as pirate lore. For several centuries rum was even part of the daily rations given to British sailors.

From the roughest “kill devil” that emerged from the sugar plantations of Jamaica, Barbados, and the Virgin Islands, to the fine aged rums you can sip today, rum continues to be part of the culture of the Caribbean.

Your taste of the islands starts with that first Bolongo Welcome Rum Punch — “delicious, sweet, and strong,” in the words of one happy resort guest. A free rum punch upon arrival to the resort has been one of the longest running traditions at Bolongo Bay, and we don’t plan on stopping it anytime soon! When that first rum is hardly enough, you can still savor the flavor all the way home with souvenir bottles of Cruzan rum, made right here in the USVI.

For more than four decades, Bolongo Bay Beach Resort has celebrated Caribbean rum in its own unique way by hosting a weekly Snorkel Rum Hunt, which is as fantastic as it sounds: resort guests slip on masks and flippers and plunge into the bay in a hunt for “sunken treasure,” with the booty being mini bottles of white, gold, flavored and aged rum.

“One of my favorite island memories is snorkeling for sunken rum bottles at Bolongo Bay,” says RumShop Ryan. “It’s a ton of fun!”

Iggies Beach Bar is of course one of the most famous beach bars to drink rum in the Caribbean, especially during the monthly Full Moon Party when you can enjoy our signature rum drinks with new and old friends in a celebration under the stars.

Want to celebrate National Rum Day with a bucket of Iggies’ VooDoo Juice at home? Here’s the recipe for a true taste of St. Thomas — cheers!
